Frequently Asked Questions

Living At Jones

Q: How big are the Jones mattresses?
A: All mattresses are Twin Extra Long mattresses. You will need to buy Twin XL bedsheets—normal twin size will NOT fit. You can find them at most stores that sell bedding for college students, like Target.

Q: Can I have a fridge or a microwave in my room?
A: The first floor kitchen has it's own microwave and full-sized refrigerator, so it's not necessary to have a full fridge or microwave in your room. Most students get a mini-fridge for their room to keep their own food and beverages separate from the public fridge. Regular microwaves are not allowed in the rooms (they can blow fuses). The only way you can have a microwave is if you get a fridge/microwave combo, which you can rent through Housing and Dining. However, most students just end up using the microwaves in the common kitchen.

Q: Should I bring blinds or curtains for the windows?
A: All of the rooms are already equipped with full blinds, but students can bring blackout curtains if they are light-sensitive.

Q: Should I bring a couch for my room?
A: This is really up to you and your roommate. The Jones rooms can definitely fit a couch, though one of you will probably have to bunk your bed in order to have enough space for it. If you're not sure, you can always wait until you get here and decide on a room configuration with your roommate, and then get a couch from Target or other places nearby. Also, each floor has its own lobby with several couches and a coffee table, so you can always hang out there and save a little money and space in your room.

O-Week

Q: I'm worried about classes filling up before I get to register. How does registration work? Are there enough spaces reserved for new students in introductory courses?
A: Course availability for incoming students all depends on what classes you want to take. Since all n
ew students sign up for first semester classes together, your first semester it may be harder to get into all of your top choices; however, rest assured that there are spaces reserved for new students in all of the intro level classes, and you should be able to get into all the classes that you need. You'll sign up for classes on the Friday of O-Week, but don't worry, you'll receive plenty of academic advising from advisors and faculty members throughout the week!

Next School Year

Q: When do I have to move out of Jones for winter break, and when can I move back in for the spring semester?
A: Students must be moved out for winter break by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 19. Housing & Dining closes the dorms for maintenance over the break, so you can't stay at Rice during that time, but you can leave all of your stuff in your room. You can move back in starting at noon on Saturday, January 10. For more information, see your Housing Agreement.

Q: Can I store my belongings on campus during the summer?
A: Sadly, Jones College has no on campus storing for the summer. Michelle Bennack, our college coorrdinator, is exceedlingly helpful in assisting students in finding storage off campus. Keep an eye out for emails from her at the end of the spring semester for more information.
