There are four things that Joanna loves in life: carbohydrates, Netflix, the Baltimore Ravens, and her new students (AKA you). Consider yourself lucky if you have Joanna (you can call her Jo, or JoJo Weed) as your advisor, because she is one of the kindest and most talented people you will ever meet. While she is an Archi student by day, working hard in studio, she is literally a bo$$ by night, as the General Manager of the Hoot, Rice’s late-night food hub. In her spare time, she likes to dominate on both the Powderpuff field and the world of Candy Crush. Don’t be intimidated by her accomplishments, though. Joanna is the kind of girl who will bring you chocolate when you are stressed, surprise you with a pizza when you are hungry, or do a charcoal face mask with you when your pores are clogged. New students, consider yourself lucky, because not only do you have a wonderful co-advisor in Joanna, but a valuable friend.

Hailing from Hondo, TX, this fierce farmer’s boy is one hell of a character. With the intelligence of Tyrion Lannister, the cunning of Lord Baelish, the empathy of Khaleesi, the insane good looks of Jaime Lannister, and the stern loyalty of Ned Stark, Ryan Saathoff is in fact the true heir to the Iron Throne. Ryan is a master in all things pop culture. His love for film, music, television, literature, and celebrity gossip is truly unrivaled. When he’s not on Netflix or out exploring the foodie corners of Houston, Ryan double majors in Political Science and Environmental Policy Studies, while also heading the SA’s Environmental Committee—so basically he’s going to save the world. But looking past all the awesomeness that he does, at the heart of it all, Ryan is a genuinely kind, generous, loyal, and dependable friend. Have no fear; Ryan will always be there with silly cat GIFs to cheer you up. He’ll be there to lend his ear and undivided attention when you need it the most. So get ready for an awesome advisor and a true friend! You’re a lucky, lucky advisee.

Born in Italy and raised in Colorado Springs, Sam is a well-seasoned traveler who loves to run, hike, bike, climb mountains, and pretty much any form of exploration. When she is not working on medical technologies for the developing world, you can find her re-watching episodes of West Wing and How I Met Your Mother, and developing a new spoken word poem. Her taste in music includes everything from 80’s hip hop to acoustic indie, and she would love to show you her vinyl collection and vintage record player. Get ready for a week full of cat memes, “affectionate’” your mama jokes, and Forest Gump references, and that’s all I have to say about that.

Born in a rural Wisconsin barn on a windy April morning, Carmella DeSerto will grow steadfast roots in your heart like the bountiful harvest of her 15-acre hobby farm back home. This Spanish and Sports Medicine pre-med student gave up her simple backwoods ways and hitched a ride on a riverboat down the Mississippi River to Houston. Upon arriving, she traded her hay bales for telephones and is now responsible for pestering Rice parents for every last penny as an employee at Rice telefund. Often seen starting the party, she can be recognized by her voluminous hair and voluptuous body. Carmella will Just Dance her way into your heart and serenade you with her sexy saxophone jazz solos. Don’t let her intimidating Italian eyebrows fool you, Carmella has a warm heart and an open ear, but you better be on her good side because she will rule the world one day. #DeSerto2016
